INTRODUCTION OF THE TERRITORIES LAW REFORM BILL
17 March 2010
The Minister for Home Affairs, Brendan O’Connor, today announced the introduction of the Territories Law Reform Bill into Parliament.
The Bill is a significant reform for the governance of Norfolk Island and will:
- Enhance the accountability and transparency of the Norfolk Island Government and Administration;
- Establish a new financial framework; and
- Improve the operation of the Norfolk Island Government and provide for reform of the voting system for the Legislative Assembly.
“The Territories Law Reform Bill implements significant reforms to Norfolk Island’s governance arrangements,” Mr O’Connor said.
“When I visited Norfolk Island in December of last year, many in the Norfolk Island community talked to me about the need for reform to their system of self government. The Bill I introduced today will improve the Norfolk Island Government’s accountability, giving residents of the Island greater confidence in the Island’s long term future.”
“The Bill will enable the community to better scrutinise the actions of the Norfolk Island Government and Administration.
“The Australian Government appreciates the cooperation and input of the Norfolk Island Legislative Assembly, Administration and community in developing these reforms.”
The Bill also amends the Christmas Island Act and the Cocos (Keeling) Island Act to improve efficiency under the service delivery arrangements the Australian Government has with the Western Australian Government.
