MINISTER WELCOMES NEW ACT CHIEF POLICE OFFICER

15 March 2010

Minister for Home Affairs today congratulated Assistant Commissioner Roman Quaedvlieg on his appointment as the new ACT Chief Police Officer.

Assistant Commissioner Quaedvlieg's appointment as the ACT's most senior police officer comes after extensive experience in Australian Federal Police National Operations, and a variety of community policing roles while a member of the Queensland Police Service.

The AFP provides policing services to the government and community of the Australian Capital Territory. Mr O'Connor said the Chief Police Officer is pivotal in providing the people of the ACT with a safe and secure community.

"As the Minister with portfolio responsibility for Territories and the Australian Federal Police, I am pleased that the ACT Government has chosen such a highly qualified and suitable candidate from a very strong field of applicants. I congratulate Assistant Commissioner Quaedvlieg on his appointment," Mr O'Connor said.

"Assistant Commissioner Quaedvlieg's appointment as the ACT's most senior police officer comes after an extensive 25-year career in law enforcement. He has extensive experience in AFP National Operations and is a fifteen year veteran of the Queensland Police Service.

This extensive experience and successful track record demonstrates he is well equipped to meet current and future law enforcement challenges in the ACT and to build upon existing community policing initiatives.

"Assistant Commissioner Quaedvlieg replaces Michael Phelan, who was recently promoted to AFP Deputy Commissioner, Close Operations Support. Deputy Commissioner Phelan served as the ACT Chief Police Officer with distinction for over two years and the Government is appreciative of his significant contribution in that role."

"I looking forward to working closely with Assistant Commissioner Quaedvlieg to ensure the ACT maintains its high level of community policing and the people of Canberra continue to have trust in the quality and integrity of their police force," Mr O'Connor said.
