AUSTRALIAN INSTITUTE OF CRIMINOLOGY DIRECTOR APPOINTED

Minister for Home Affairs Brendan O’Connor today announced the appointment of Dr Adam Tomison as Director of the Australian Institute of Criminology.

Dr Tomison’s appointment is for one year and will commence on 13 July 2009.

“Dr Tomison’s significant scholarly contributions to research in child protection both nationally and internationally make him an asset to the AIC,” Mr O’Connor said.

“I congratulate Dr Tomison on his appointment and welcome his future contribution to the work of the AIC.”

Dr Tomison will leave his position as Associate Professor and Head of the Child Protection Program at the Menzies School of Health Research, Northern Territory to take up the AIC Directorship.   

The position of Director was advertised nationally and internationally in late 2008. 

The AIC is an Australian Government statutory authority and was established under the Criminology Research Act 1971.

The AIC operates with a Board of Management and reports to the Minister for Home Affairs.

Dr Adam Tomison

Dr Tomison has been Head of the Child Protection Program at the Menzies School of Health Research since 2008. He has held various senior positions within the Northern Territory Department of Health and Families, including Directorships in Families and Children Services, Community Services Policy, Reform, Population and Evaluation of the Office of Aboriginal Health, Family and Social Policy. He was also appointed as the Northern Territory Government’s inaugural Principal Child Protection Adviser in 2004.

He has made significant academic contributions to scholarly and applied research in the area of child protection, including serving as a member of the editorial board of Child Abuse and Neglect – the International Journal since 2004.
