BORDER PROTECTION OFFICERS EXCEL IN 2009

Minister for Home Affairs, Brendan O’Connor, today praised Customs and Border Protection officers and Australian Defence Force officers, working under the direction of Border Protection Command (BPC), for their outstanding work in protecting Australia’s maritime domain this year.

The Minister acknowledged that 2009 has been an exceptionally busy year for Customs and Border Protection.

“There has been a high tempo of activity within Australia’s maritime environment and officers have effectively responded to a range of situations and delivered on the Government’s priorities.

“Throughout the year, officers remained vigilant at the border with more than 20 illegal foreign fishing boats apprehended and more than 50 suspected irregular entry vessels intercepted.

“In addition, partnership strengthening activities with national and international maritime authorities has further enhanced maritime security across the Australian-Pacific region,” Mr O’Connor said.

Customs and Border Protection enforcement officers also responded to a number of search and rescue missions providing critical safety of life at sea support to people in distress in Australian waters.

“In three separate search and rescue operations, officers’ demonstrated high standards of seamanship, professionalism, devotion to duty and compassion for fellow mariners as they saved the lives of people from vessels in distress in the Torres Strait area and Indian Ocean,” Mr O’Connor said.

Under the control of BPC, officers have delivered an effective tactical response program this year and will continue to safeguard the Australian border over the Christmas period.

“The Australian Government acknowledges the important work these highly skilled and committed officers do every day to ensure the integrity of Australia’s borders and the safety of our community and environment.”
