RECORD AMOUNT OF ACC INTELLIGENCE REPORTS IN 2008-09
26 November 2009
The Australian Crime Commission's (ACC) Annual Report 2008–09 was tabled in Parliament yesterday, highlighting the significant contribution made by the ACC to the law enforcement community including a substantial increase in intelligence provided to partner agencies.
The ACC delivered almost 6000 operational intelligence disseminations and intelligence products to its partner agencies in 2008–09, an increase of 46 per cent from the previous year.
The Minister for Home Affairs, Mr Brendan O'Connor, said the increase in ACC intelligence had improved the national understanding of serious and organised crime, and equipped Australian law enforcement with the information they need to target serious and organised crime.
"The success of the ACC is not solely determined by the number of seizures, arrests or convictions it records, but rather by the quality of intelligence collected and the level of collaboration with its partner agencies," Mr O'Connor said.
"The rise in intelligence products represents the shift of the ACC to focus on its specialist capabilities and to deliver unique intelligence that enables law enforcement agencies to disrupt organised crime and protect the Australian community."
Other highlights from the reporting period include:
- delivery of key intelligence reports on the private security industry and transport sector
- introduction of the National Clandestine Laboratory Database
- key intelligence and operational support to Strike Force Wolsley, which focused on outlaw motorcycle gang activity and resulted in 123 charges, 36 arrests, and notable seizures of firearms, assets and illicit drugs.
The report also outlined the new operating model, the Sentinel Strategy, which will be adopted by the ACC to meet broader national intelligence priorities and better target those criminal entities that pose the highest threat to the Australian community.
"With increasing levels of sophistication and scope of organised crime, it is crucial that we continue to find new ways to utilise our capabilities and focus our efforts on delivering maximum impact."
The Annual Report is now available from the ACC website.
