MINISTER VISITS CITY OF BELMONT SAFER SUBURBS PROJECT

20 November 2009

Minister for Home Affairs Brendan O’Connor visited the City of Belmont today to observe a demonstration of the City’s CCTV Alarm Assist project, which received $1.4 million under the Australian Government’s Safer Suburbs Plan.

“The City of Belmont is to be congratulated on its commitment to the safety and well being of its residents, and for the successful implementation of the CCTV Alarm Assist project,” Mr O’Connor said.

“The Australian Government is working with all levels of Government and local communities to continue to make our streets and suburbs safer and it’s often community-based projects such as this that are the most successful.”

The demonstration was opened by the Mayor of the City of Belmont, and involved the activation of duress, residential and business alarm systems.

The Minister observed how the CCTV camera systems respond to an alarm by capturing live footage and alerting the City’s community watch service and police of an incident.

“Through liaison with stakeholders and the community the City of Belmont has succeeded in enhancing its CCTV infrastructure to benefit the community,” Mr O’Connor said.

The grant was awarded last year to improve community safety and reduce property crime through the installation of an integrated CCTV and alarm system.

“As well as addressing housing, education and unemployment, the Government is helping communities install infrastructure in an effort to reduce crime and the fear of crime in the community,” the Minister added.
