QUEENS BIRTHDAY HONOURS FOR AFP MEMBERS
Minister for Home Affairs Bob Debus today congratulated two Australian Federal Police (AFP) members named in the Queen's Birthday Honours list.
National Manager Aviation Mandy Newton and National Manager High Tech Crime Operations Andrew Colvin have received the Australian Police Medal for distinguished service to Australian policing.
“The Australian Police Medal is given in recognition of the important contributions to policing made by these talented and dedicated individuals,” Mr Debus said.
“They are worthy recipients of the Australian Police Medal, which is one of the highest honours that can be bestowed on members of the Australian policing community.”
Mandy Newton was appointed National Manager Aviation in February 2006. She is responsible for law enforcement and counter terrorism first response at Australia's major airports and in the aviation sector and manages about 1000 staff.
Assistant Commissioner Newton was appointed Manager Aviation Security in March 2005, after being a member of the ACT Policing executive from 2002. In that role, she managed a number of significant police operations including the Canberra Bushfires in January 2003 and the visits of President Bush and President Whu in October 2003.
Andrew Colvin has been a member of the AFP for 18 years, progressing through the ranks working on organised crime investigations including narcotics importation, fraud, money laundering, politically motivated crime and terrorist financing.
In 2002, he played an important role in the AFP's response to the growing threat of terrorism. Shortly after this appointment, the AFP assumed a major role in partnership with the Indonesian National Police in response to the terrorist attacks in Bali and Assistant Commissioner Colvin was central to the AFP's national and international response.
In March 2008, Andrew became National Manager High Tech Crime Operations. High Tech Crime Operations is a new AFP business unit focused on delivering leading-edge technology-enabled policing and combating new technology enabled crime.
