GOVERNMENT WELCOMES MOKBEL DECISION

The Minister for Home Affairs Bob Debus has welcomed a decision by the Government of Greece to approve the extradition of Melbourne fugitive Tony Mokbel.

“Late last night Australian time, the Greek Justice Minister approved Australia’s request for extradition which was originally sought on 5 July 2007.

“I’d like to thank the Greek Government for its cooperation on this matter.

“Mokbel will be extradited to face 18 serious charges in Australia including two murder charges and is also facing sentencing for drug trafficking.

“He has exhausted all his extradition appeal rights through the highest courts of Greece and Australia.

“It is now up to Australian and Greek authorities to determine when and how Mokbel will be returned to Australia.

“I’m aware of reports that an application has been made to the European Court of Human Rights, however that is a matter for Mokbel and his legal representatives.”
