$15 MILLION FOR SAFER SUBURBS
The Minister for Home Affairs, Bob Debus, has today taken the first step in delivering on the Government’s election commitment to provide $15 million for the Safer Suburbs Plan.
“This funding will be provided to address crime and anti-social behaviour by establishing important community safety measures including closed circuit television and improved street lighting,” Mr Debus said.
“The Commonwealth Government is joining with local organisations and State Governments to continue to make our streets and suburbs safer.
“Projects developed and designed at the local level can make a real difference in reducing crime.
“I'm pleased to be able to announce the Government is meeting its election commitments in regard to CCTV and other crime prevention measures with more than 25 communities across the country expected to benefit," Mr Debus said.
Organisations earmarked to receive funding will work closely with the Attorney General's Department which will be seeking detailed project proposals from nominated organisations.
Proposals will need to demonstrate good practice in crime prevention and mesh with other crime prevention activities in relevant locations. Upon acceptance of the proposal, the Department will work with organisations to develop a funding agreement.
Organisations receiving funding will be asked to provide information on the impact and effectiveness of their project which will help with the assessment of future crime prevention planning.
Recent data on crime in Australia has shown a steady decrease in property crime with rates of unlawful entry with intent, motor vehicle theft and other theft all showing declines in recent years.
