$2 Million taken from criminals to fund PCYCs
6 March 2012
The Federal Government today announced that almost $2 million confiscated from criminals will be provided to Police and Community Youth Clubs (PCYCs) around Australia to help young people at risk of falling into a life of crime.
The money has been awarded to 16 Police and Community Youth Clubs (PCYC) and Blue Light organisations who will work in partnership with community groups around Australia.
“We’re taking money from criminals and investing it in PCYC’s across the country to help young people who are at risk of falling into a life of crime,” Mr Clare said.
“PCYC’s are terrific organisations. They’re a great example of community policing at work.
“That’s why the Federal Government is supporting the crime prevention work they do.
“This funding will pay for things like anti-truancy programs to keep young people in school, outreach programs targeting youth crime hotspots, drug intervention programs and training programs to get them into jobs.”
Mr Clare made the announcement today at Bridgewater PCYC with Member for Lyons Dick Adams.
Bridgwater PCYC will use their $111,100 grant to employ a youth worker to reduce school truancy – an ongoing local issue linked to youth crime in the area.
The youth worker will work with students at school and will also hold activities like drug and alcohol education at the PCYC after school hours.
The funding comes from the Proceeds of Crime Fund which enables money confiscated under Commonwealth laws to be returned to the community to prevent and reduce crime across Australia.
A list of the funded projects is attached. Information regarding crime prevention funding can be found at http://www.crimeprevention.gov.au/.
